Week 3 – Assignment: Application and Analysis: Fear Appeals

You will complete this assignment after reviewing the sample application of the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM) in Chapter 5, pg. 100 of the Health Behavior Theory textbook.

Fear appeals, when used correctly, can be used to motivate health behavior change. The EPPM integrates several models toward determining how people respond to fear-based messaging and communications. One of the uses of the EPPM is to aid in the design of fear-based messaging. In producing a successful message, the developer must engage two major ideas—perceived threat and perceived efficacy of the behavior in question.

You will design an informational brochure using the EPPM as your framework. Choose a health behavior and a target population in which the behavior needs to be changed. Determine the proper messaging that would support an effective fear appeal. In developing your brochure and message, remember to address these four constructs:

1. Threat of harm if the message’s recommendations are not followed

2. Threat that is personalized to the target of the message

3. Response efficacy, in which the recommendation given will both eliminate the threat and demonstrate that this elimination is positive

4. Personal efficacy or self-efficacy; the belief that an individual can perform the recommended action. (DiClemente, Salazar, & Crosby, 2012)

It is suggested that you use a publishing application (e.g., Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office Publisher) to develop a tri-fold brochure. Balance your text with graphics while addressing the required elements. Please cite at least two webpages of organizations where the reader can learn more about the health issue. There is no need to include references on the document itself. However, compile your references into a Microsoft Word document.
